Submitter’s Note:

Here are some of my notes (brief) from an “interview” with a New Zealand sports psychologist. I hope they may be helpful to you… in whatever endeavour in which you may partake. Enjoy…

“MIND OVER MATTER”

How to tap into the psychology of performance (peak) through developing your mental skills?

The importance of mental preparation

Keep growing in your mental skills

It’s all about performing under pressure

Push through the inevitable obstacles that get in your way with confidence that you WILL succeed (especially feelings of self doubt)

Have a PLAN, then execute it

The cream nearly always rises to the top

Don’t lose your plan

Remain focussed and don’t allow yourself to be derailed from your goals…your dreams

“Show me the boy at age seven…and I’ll show you the man.”

The science and art of discipline (self)

Achievers move (in small steps) daily towards where they want to go

Stand up for yourself and be proud of your past achievements.

Put in the work (“hard graft”) then EXPECT success

It’s a simple message: You have to do it …YOURSELF!

Embrace the mindset (positive)

You have to have clarity to move forward with the right intensity

Drive hard

When starting out on your quest, you need a person who believes in you and encourages you- reinforce a sense of a person’s self worth.

The best approach involves the “whole person concept“, eg. you are more than just a rugby player, – you are a father, husband, etc

Many top achievers are perfectionists- they don’t allow for failure- Be an individual, yourself first… and don’t let other people define who you are (and what you represent).

“Remember above all else…to thine own self be true.” (thanks dearest mom, your spirit lives on)

-Polonius in ‘Hamlet’ *

MENTAL SKILLS

It’s all about performing under pressure.

“Mental strength in pressure-cooker situations is a key ingredient to success.”

– me

Control your attention on the task at hand – the very best sportsmen and women don’t get diverted. It’s what and how they control things in the BIG moments.

In team sports the team always comes first… and self second – the self mustn’t rise above the interests of the team (there’s no ‘I’ in ‘team’, but there is ‘I’ in ‘win’).

Once you get the right thoughts, that positive mindset, then everything else fits into place.

Get the building blocks right.

MANAGE YOUR MIND and you MANAGE YOUR LIFE

YOU CAN…YOU WILL DO IT!

Shared by Craig Lock (“Information and Inspiration Distributer”, Incorrigible Encourager and People-builder)

“The difference between the impossible and possible is merely a measure of man’s (person’s) determination and persistence.”

The greatest mountain we need to climb lies in our our own minds”. It’s not the highest mountain that we conquer, but ourselves, our own mentality. Overcoming perceived limits to reach (attain) the pinnacle of our own minds.”

– craig (as inspired by the words of Sir Edmund Hillary, conquerer of Mount Everest (1919-2008)

PS:
Most importantly,
have FUN enjoying the life journey

“Success to others may be apparent in what you DO; but significance, meaning and purpose lies, then reveals itself in what you ARE and BECOME down the ‘river of life’ – how and the spirit with which you face, then overcome the daily obstacles, the frequent trials and tribulations along the often rocky path-way of life’s magical and mysterious journey. Light YOUR path brightly.”

“True success is being the YOU that you really want to be. Do not follow the well-beaten track of others towards success – like the rainbow, it is often an illusion always just beyond our reach. Make your own path and let your spirit blaze a brilliant trail towards the pot of gold, the prize for the gift – one that is uniquely you and YOUR successful journey down the river of life.

“Champions aren’t made in the gym. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them – an inner flame that burns brightly…with purpose, desire and passion. True champions live the dream, the vision of who and what they can one day become…. even a long time before it happens.”
– craig

here lived a great street sweeper
