A Tribute to Ayrton Senna (from YouTube videos)

A lot of people go through life doing things badly. Racing’s important to men who do it well. When you’re racing, it’s life. Anything that happens before or after is just waiting.”

– Steve McQueen in the film ‘Le Mans’ (1971)

“Grand Prix racing is primarily a mental contest… it’s a battle of strength
of wills by the combatants and a magnificent contest, the arena to display
and share unique gifts and talents. Perhaps in this ‘theatre of speed’, F1 is a metaphor for life itself”
– craig

“Maybe Senna’s lap at Monaco was 100% perfect, but it’s not being in the Zone that makes you qualify like he did that time. That was something else – “beyond the Zone”. That’s heaven…’

– Lewis Hamilton on his boy-hood hero

“In his finest moments Ayrton Senna found tiny glimpses of a heaven on Earth to which each ONE of us can aspire.”

   – fine writing by Clyde Brolin in his fascinating book ‘Overdrive: Formula One in the Zone’

This highest state of being “in the Zone” of exceptional performance is often known as “pushing the envelope” and flirting with the very limit of what’s possible.

But to do this regularly, these superlative performances,  you need to have a clean mind – the importance of having a clear head, with no mental clutter in the “top two inches”.

And this mental state only comes into reach when you are perfectly relaxed, yet filled with an “adrenalin rush”, yet are perfectly comfortable and totally focussed on the task. You then rid yourself of the obsession with the end result… and simply let go, let spirit, God flow.

“The Holy Grail”

All the greats in any chosen sport, or for that matter in any endeavour, work really hard at “lifting their games” to the highest levels possible. Whilst some athletes are more naturally gifted than others, the work ethic of the most successful sports stars is exceptionally strong. And that is the common factor, the bond in consistent peak performances.

However, I believe that this Zone is occasionally attainable to anyone motivated sufficiently to performing at a high level, no matter the discipline.

“I’m prepared to wager that we will all visit the Zone at least once before we depart this planet.”

– Clyde Brolin

“The Zone is where you find your best performance and everything works. You have to push the limit of an activity to get that kind of experience

– Josef Leberer, physio-therapist to Ayrton Senna

You have to practice to find the Zone… repeat the process often and practice going step by step into a deeper spiritual state… as in meditation.

“The Zone could simply be a gateway to the divine, one of God’s methods of reminding us of His – and our – glorious power.”

– fine and powerful writing by Clyde Brolin in ‘Overdrive: Formula One in the Zone’
